Book Giving Day

Many people think of February 14 as Valentine’s Day. Here at the library, we like to think of it as International Book Giving Day. Here’s the intent of the organization that got us hooked on this idea:  International Book Giving Day is a 100% volunteer initiative aimed at increasing children’s access to and enthusiasm for books.

• Most children in developing countries do not own books.
• In the United Kingdom, one-third of children do not own books.
• In the United States, two-thirds of children living in poverty do not own books.

International Book Giving Day’s focus is on encouraging people worldwide to give a book to a child on February 14th. We invite individuals to 1) gift a book to a friend or family member, 2) leave a book in a waiting room for children to read or, 3) donate a gently used book to a local library, hospital or shelter or to an organization that distributes used books to children in need internationally. Here at the Annapolis Valley Regional Library, we celebrate in our own special way—by dropping off wrapped book gifts in our communities, for you to find and keep (or find and share). And we don’t stop with children’s books—we like to give books to all ages.  Since February 14 is on a Sunday this year, we will be dropping books in our communities the week before. And this year, our Book Patrol will be out in communities on Thursday, February 11 giving books away. Watch for us! 

Where do we get the books we give away? Adopt a Library gives us free books for kids, and we also get lots of donations that make great gifts for our book-loving fans.  We’ll give you some hints on where to find the books on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, so follow us!

Book Giving Day

For the third year in a row, Annapolis Valley Regional Library (AVRL) will be participating in International Book Giving Day. The goal of this initiative is to get books into the hands of as many children as possible. Here at AVRL, we’ve included teens and adults in that goal. During the week of February 9-14, our branch libraries will be hiding wrapped gift books out in the community. Whoever finds the book gets to keep it, or share it with a friend. 

International Book Giving Day is celebrated world-wide on February 14 each year. We use donated, gently used books as our give-away books. Look for pictures of the hidden books on Facebook, Twitter, and our website. And if you find a book, use the #giveabook hashtag to let us know!

International Book Giving Day: Share the Love of Reading!

International Book Giving Day is a day dedicated to getting new, used and borrowed books in

the hands of as many as possible. The Annapolis Valley Regional Library is proud to participate again this year. 

A few packages of books will be sent to each of our branches.  Some of these packages will be adult books, and some will be children’s books. Each of the packages will be wrapped and hidden randomly in a library community, or perhaps even in a branch. Staff will be taking photos when the books are hidden, and these photos will be posted on Facebook as clues. Each book is a gift to whoever finds it. Please send us your stories on receiving this gift, as well as photos and we will post them on Facebook.

International Book Giving Day is an international holiday. In 2013, International Book Giving Day was celebrated by people in Australia, Canada, South Africa, France, India, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, the Philippines, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, Nigeria, Nicaragua, Brazil, Egypt, Poland, Greece, Portugal, Mexico, Macedonia, Malawi, Hungary, Malaysia, Israel, Denmark, Thailand, Indonesia, Jordan, China, Puerto Rico and Bulgaria. We hope that people around the world will think about the best ways to help children in need in their communities.

Book Giving Day!

The Annapolis Valley Regional Library is happy to report that we will be participating in International Book Giving Day on February 14.  Books for kids, teens, and adults have already been placed in locations throughout the Valley by the staff from all of our branches.  These books were left as gifts to whoever finds them - and they even look like gifts, because we've wrapped them up and added a Valentine to each one.  Because we think reading is sweet, we want to share the gift of literacy. The books are from donations and from Adopt a Library. Look for one in your community!  If you find one, you can keep it, read it and pass it along to a friend.  For more information on this international event, visit http://bookgivingday.com/ .
