Be Fit - Physical Literacy Kits

Summer is here and it is time to get outside and play! Did you know that physical literacy  is just as important as reading literacy? Young children have to learn how to catch, throw, jump, and balance, just as they have to learn the alphabet and sounding out words. And we have to keep doing those things to be good at them!

In order to make it easier for parents to help their kids learn physical literacy, we've partnered with Sport Nova Scotia and Department of Health & Wellness,  Active Living Branch to create kits that you can take home and play with! Each kit contains fun items such as balls, juggling scarves, activity dice, frisbees, skipping ropes, and more! There's an activity booklet included in each one that guides you in ways to use the items included. We've even included 4 picture books that will get you moving as you read together. The kits are designed to increase physical literacy and to make it easy for you to be active. Our kits are modeled on kits that were originally developed in Kingston, ON. Each kit may be checked out for 3 weeks. All you need is your valid AVRL library card!

We'll also have the kits in some of our branches this summer  for you to explore. To learn more about the kits and about physical literacy, click HERE.

Sneak Peek!

We are working on something really fun here at AVRL. They are called "Be Fit" Physical Literacy Kits. We all know how important it is for kids to have access to books and language at an early age, but sometimes we might forget how important it is for kids to be active, even as toddlers or infants.

To make this easier  for families, we've partnered with Sport Nova Scotia and Valley Active Living to create kits that you can take home and play with! Each kit contains fun items such as balls, juggling scarves, activity dice, frisbees, skipping ropes, and more! There's an activity booklet included in each one that guides you in ways to use the items included. We've even included 4 picture books that will get you moving as you read together.

The kits will be ready soon, so keep an eye out! We've already been playing ball in the office, so we know you are going to have fun with these. Our first official launch is in Berwick on Saturday, April 4. We'll have the kits there for you to test out, show you some games to play with them, and we'll also have healthy snacks and door prizes, so come see us then! More launches will be scheduled -- one at our Windsor branch and one in Annapolis County, so everyone has a chance to come play!

Once they are ready, you'll be able to check one out for 3 weeks, and use it at home, for parties, or take it camping. Wouldn't it be fun to have an Active Play birthday party? Preschools and daycares could borrow them for a Fun Day. The possibilities are endless! And there's no charge to borrow one.  We'll have them ready by April 4, so start thinking of how you will use a Be Fit Kit!

Pedometers, Energy meters, Breastfeeding Resource Kits, & Little Reader Bags … We've got a little of everything!

PEDOMETERS
Getting in shape for the summer?   Having a little friendly competition with co-workers?  Celebrating Nova Scotia Walk Day on May 8? Why not try out a pedometer, courtesy of your public library.  Through a partnership with the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, pedometers are just part of our regular borrowing collection.  You can place your hold directly in the catalogue, or talk to library staff about borrowing one.

ENERGY METERS

Interested in knowing how much energy that old freezer is utilizing?  What about that 20 year old microwave?   Thanks to a partnership with the former Conserve Nova Scotia, we have energy meters to help you with that!  The two most useful measurements on this meter are "watts" and "cost".   Many appliances use electricity even when turned off.  Examples include the TV and cable/satellite box.  Use the energy meter to identify these phantom loads on your power.   Do you leave your computer, monitor and printer on all day?  Use the meter to tally your savings in watts by powering off the electronics when not in use.

BREASTFEEDING RESOURCE KITS
A Valley partnership among various health groups resulted in the creation of six Breastfeeding  Resource kits.  Each kit is a bag of items to support  breastfeeding parents and their infants.   The All About Breastfeeding kits include the dvd Breastfeeding: bringing baby to breast; books Breastfeeding made simple, by Nancy Mohrbacher;  The womanly art of breastfeeding, by Diane Wiessinger;   a book for the baby, We Like to Nurse; and one for the siblings of the breastfeeding child, Will There be a Lap for Me?  Place your hold now.

LITTLE READER BAGS
Are you familiar with our Little Reader Bags?   If your child is beginning to read, and you need help finding material perfectly suited to his/her reading level, our Youth Services Librarian has made the job easier for you.   She's selected the books and colour-coded the bags into these categories:  Just Starting (Blue); Emerging Reader (Green); Early Reader (Pink); and, Developing Reader (Yellow).  Click here for a description of each , and then decide which one meets your needs. (We have them in French, too.) For a keyword search in the catalogue, just type Little Reader Kit to get your complete list and place a hold.  It can't get any easier.
