Sharing Stories ... discover your community

Seniors Week - October 1 - 7, 2016

During the celebration of Canadian Library Month in October, Seniors Week is an opportunity for public libraries to focus on programming, services, books and materials for seniors provided by the nine public library regions in Nova Scotia. Throughout the year, library staff continue to welcome and serve older adults coming to the library.

Seniors Week is a provincial initiative to incorporate library promotion and engagement of seniors within our communities. Public libraries are encouraged to engage with our seniors and work together to provide for their needs. National Seniors Day will be celebrated on October 1, 2016. Provincially, Seniors Week will be celebrated from October 1 - October 7, 2016.

This year the theme is 'Sharing Stories ... discover your community'. Library branch staff have been creative in programming ideas this year. look for a presentation on Charles MacDonald and his Faerie Cottages, Positive Approaches for Dementia, Conversations About Death and Dying, Rug Hooking, Card Making, Celebrating the Harvest Season, a talk on the book 'Valley Child: A Memoir' or come to an Old-fashioned Kitchen Party. For a complete list of all programs go to the event page on our website: www.valleylibrary.ca/seniors-week. Registration may be required for some of the programs.

Browse our online catalogue for some interesting reading material and check out the creative displays of items chosen by staff at each of our branches. This may also be a good time to celebrate our senior library workers!

Seniors Week at Nova Scotia Public Libraries – October 18 – October 24, 2015

During the celebration of Canadian Library Month, Seniors Week is an opportunity for public libraries to focus on programming, services, books and materials for seniors provided by the nine public library regions in Nova Scotia. Throughout the year, library staff continue to welcome and serve older adults coming to the library.

The Annapolis Valley Regional Library’s eleven branches and Bookmobile have a wonderful list of programs and events planned. Some of the exciting events include Third Thursday Social Group in Windsor (October 15) with a display of artifacts from the West Hants Historical Society. Drop by the branch to test your knowledge. Or join Sue at the Berwick branch for a Kitchen Party. Perhaps now is the time to try Chair Yoga at the Isabel and Roy Joudrey Memorial Library in Hantsport. The programs offered in Bridgetown include a Recipe Swap, Seniors Travel and a Talk with Dr. John Ross about end-of-life options. The Kentville branch is offering a slide presentation on Miner’s Marsh.  The Rosa M. Harvey Library in Middleton has a full week of events including a presentation on Mona Parsons, and Seed Saving and Herbal Medicine.  For a complete list of all programs go to the Event page on our website: http://www.valleylibrary.ca/calendar.

Browse our online catalogue for some interesting reading material, such as iPad for Seniors or Senior FitnessStop by and check out the creative displays of items chosen by staff at each branch. And this may also be a good time to celebrate our senior library workers!

Seniors Week is October 19 – 25, 2014.

Seniors Week week is an opportunity to focus on programming and services for seniors provided by public libraries. The goals are to increase seniors’ knowledge of public libraries, and to increase seniors’ usage of the public library system and services. Last year was the first year of this celebration.

There are 120 programs happening in Nova Scotia during this week. Click this link for information on other regional programming. Branches of the Annapolis Valley Regional Library are offering 23 programs. On October 20 the Port Williams branch is offering an estate planning workshop. Come and learn about GPS in Kingston, or healthy eating tips for life in Middleton on October 21. The Windsor branch will have games and puzzles available every day during seniors’ week and a live performance by Dewey and the Decimals on October 23. The Hantsport branch will host an informational session with a local physiotherapist, and Kingston will host an open house of services available for seniors in the community. Some branches will be hosting RCMP senior safety workshops. Click here to view our events for this week, and to register for special programs.
